St. Peter’s Marked its 175th Anniversary with a Three Day Celebration

Despite a devastating December 2023 fire that destroyed its 19th-century building, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Oak Grove, Virginia, recently marked its 175th anniversary with a three-day celebration. The Very Rev. Rodney E. Gordon, rector of St. Peter’s, said he decided the events had to be held at St. Peter’s despite the fire that destroyed the church and damaged other facilities.

Diocese of Virginia Receives Grant from Lilly Endowment

The Episcopal Diocese of Virginia received a $1,248,768 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to help establish the Pathways to Prayer and Practice Initiative. The program is funded through Lilly Endowment’s Nurturing Children Through Worship and Prayer Initiative, a national initiative designed to help Christian congregations more fully and intentionally engage children in intergenerational corporate worship and prayer practices.

Bishop Stevenson Ordains Three New Priests

On September 28, Bishop E. Mark Stevenson ordained Jon Scarffe and Redmond Self to the Sacred Order of Priests at St. Anne’s, Reston. Two days later, Bishop Stevenson traveled to St. Joseph’s in Durham, North Carolina, to ordain Lachlan Hassman to the Priesthood.

Food Ministry at Christ Church, Winchester, Feeds Children in Need

In 2014, the Outreach Committee at Christ Church, Winchester, saw that children in their community were experiencing food scarcity. They began a program called Panda Pantry, which provided backpacks with food for elementary students to take home on weekends. It began with about 30 bags of food packed each week and delivered to a local elementary school, and has continued to grow each year.
