St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, the first historically African American Episcopal parish in the U.S. South and the sixth oldest Black Episcopal congregation in the nation, welcomes guests and sponsors to celebrate its Sapphire Jubilee (165th anniversary) November 14-15.
Founded in November 1861, St. Philips took root during one of the most turbulent chapters in American history.
“St. Philip’s was born from the faith and resilience of enslaved and free people of color who dared to gather, worship, and build something lasting,” said its rector, The Rev’d Marlene E. Forrest. “We invite you to celebrate our Sapphire Jubilee — a once-in-a-generation occasion for reflection, celebration, and renewal.”
The celebration honors the parish’s enduring legacy and vibrant future through historical exhibits, commemorative journal, and two special events: the Jubilee Gala and Anniversary Worship Service.
All are invited to celebrate, preserve, and share the story of St. Philip’s while supporting Sapphire Jubilee events and activities throughout the anniversary year.
