This event honors the life of Bishop John Thomas Walker through worship and the exploration of various topics in the history of Black Episcopalians.

The African American Episcopal Historical Collection invites you to the Commemoration of the Rt. Rev. John T. Walker, 6th Bishop of Washington, at Virginia Theological Seminary on September 24, 2026. This annual observance will include a Commemorative Eucharist and the Walker Symposium, with this year’s theme focusing on the life and work of Black lay theologian Verna Dozier.

1 pm – Discussion Panel with Dozier’s editor, Cynthia Shattuck, L.H.D., and the first Black female tenured professor of VTS, the Rev. Judy Fentress-Williams, Ph.D.

3 pm – Keynote Address by the Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, 27th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church

5:15 pm at the Immanuel Chapel – Commemorative Eucharist, honoring the Rt. Rev. John T. Walker, 6th Bishop of Washington, with the Rt. Rev. Michael Curry celebrating and Dr. Donyelle McCray preaching.
