This article shares the story of a vibrant, impactful ministry supported by a Bishop’s Appeal Grant. Make a contribution to the Bishop’s Appeal to support ministries like this.
In January 2022, a nonprofit in New Kent that provided free diapers to low-income families closed its doors. Members of St. Peter’s, New Kent, felt strongly that this essential ministry needed to continue in their community. Responding to God’s call, they launched the Diaper Assistance Program, an outreach ministry that supported families by alleviating a major, essential expense.
The program provides two packs of diapers and a pack of wipes every two weeks to families in New Kent and Charles City County. Many families are referred to St. Peter’s by Thrive Virginia and local social services, but unaffiliated families can also apply for assistance. While the number of recipients fluctuates as children are potty-trained and new babies are born, the Diaper Assistance Program currently assists 34 children. St. Peter’s funds the ministry through contributions from church members, fundraising efforts, and grants. In 2023, a Bishop’s Appeal Grant covered two months of diaper supplies.
“I knew from having two children of my own how many diapers I went through and how quickly the cost added up,” shares Sarah Adams, Co-Coordinator of the program. “Many of our families have health issues, are immigrants trying to get on their feet, or are single mothers who have been victims of domestic violence. As simple as providing diapers and wipes is, I have seen first-hand what a huge difference it makes.”
Co-Coordinator Mary Margaret Gillette reflects, “As a disciple of Christ, we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves, how fortunate am I that one way I am able to do that is through my service in the Diaper Assistance Program. Not only have we been able to help members in the New Kent and Charles City communities through diapers and wipes, we have been emotional support systems for our clients as well. I have faith that God will continue to use the people of St. Peter’s to serve the community as God sees fit.”
Now entering its third year, the Diaper Assistance Program looks forward to continued growth, sharing Christ’s love with the youngest and most vulnerable among us.
