An Invitation to Serve on the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Virginia

by | Oct 26, 2026

Have you ever wondered how your gifts, experiences, and perspective might help shape the future of the Episcopal Church in Virginia? Serving on the Standing Committee offers an opportunity to do just that. As the Bishop’s council of advice, the committee helps guide decisions shaping our diocese’s leadership, mission, and future. But beyond governance, this ministry is about people, relationships, and discernment. It is an opportunity to witness God at work across our Church and help nurture what comes next.

What Does the Standing Committee Do?

Our work touches many aspects of diocesan life, including:

  • Supporting Vocational Discernment: Meeting with individuals called to the priesthood and diaconate, listening to their stories, and participating in the ordination consent process, while celebrating and supporting the vital ministry of lay vocational leaders throughout our diocese.
  • Shaping the Wider Church: Providing consent to episcopal elections and participating in decisions that influence the leadership and future of the Episcopal Church.
  • Stewarding Our Shared Resources: Reviewing significant property matters and helping ensure responsible stewardship of diocesan resources.
  • Discerning Together: Offering counsel to the Bishop, engaging complex questions, and listening for where the Holy Spirit may be calling our Church.

One of the greatest joys of this ministry is encountering the extraordinary people who make up our diocese. From those discerning ordained ministry to lay leaders faithfully serving their communities, we are continually reminded that God’s call takes many forms.

Could This Be a Ministry for You?

Perhaps God is calling you to bring your voice to this table. You do not need to be an expert in church governance or have decades of leadership experience. What matters is a willingness to listen, a commitment to the wider Church, and an openness to learning and discerning alongside others.

The Standing Committee is required by Article IV of the Constitution and Canons of The Episcopal Church. In the Diocese of Virginia, it consists of twelve members, six lay and six clergy, elected at Annual Convention for staggered three-year terms, with four new members joining each year. The committee meets for one full day each month, with preparation between meetings.

We invite you to consider submitting a nomination. Your voice, your gifts, and your perspective are part of what makes our Church stronger.
