Haiti, home to more than 93,000 of our Episcopalian siblings, is again a scene of tragedy and suffering. Having recently endured a coup, the nation was hit Saturday by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake; the death toll has surpassed 1,300, and the destruction of buildings and infrastructure is devastating. As I write, Tropical Storm Grace is heading toward Haiti, threatening flooding and mudslides.
Please pray for the Diocese of Haiti and all the people of Haiti, and all others suffering from hardship and disaster. Practical help may be given by way of a contribution to Episcopal Relief and Development, as well as to the more than 30 churches of the Diocese of Virginia who have been working in Haiti in past relief efforts (contact Aisha Huertas at ahuertas@thediocese.net or 1-800–DIOCESE for more information.) Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before you this day the people of Haiti, who have suffered much in civil unrest and natural disaster. Tend the sick and injured, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield them all, and those who work to alleviate the suffering. Help us to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and in time to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant this Father, for the love of your Son, who suffered much that we might all be one, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen
