As The Rev. Canon d’Rue Hazel retires from her role as Canon to the Ordinary on June 30, she wraps 3.5 years of service with the Diocese of Virginia and a 30+ year ministry supporting bishops, clergy, and congregations.

The Communications Team recently sat down with Canon Hazel to reflect on her story, her ministry, and what comes next in retirement.

She shared how her early work as a middle school teacher in Columbia, S.C., helped shape her call to the diaconate and her lifelong commitment to building bridges between the church and the world.

Throughout the interview, Hazel reflected on the importance of healthy leadership, safe church communities, and supporting clergy in their own growth and renewal. Supporting clergy, especially creating spaces for rest, encouragement, and formation, has been one of the most meaningful aspects of her ministry.

As retirement beckons, Hazel feels called back to one of the earliest passions of her diaconal ministry: advocacy for children, particularly those who are vulnerable to abuse, trafficking, and exploitation.

Looking back, Hazel described how healing, transformation, and service influenced her ministry. She also expressed deep gratitude for her family and for the ways God has worked through her life and ministry to help break cycles and create a healthier future for so many.

“She has spearheaded initiatives that strengthen congregations and empowered leaders in a wide variety of settings,” Bishop E. Mark Stevenson said. “She has helped clarify policies and practices that build trust. And, she has provided invaluable counsel to me as I seek to live into my calling. I will miss working with her, and being made a better bishop by her. May her retirement be full of blessings!”
