The Latest Updates

Global Mission at Annual Convention

The Diocesan Global Mission team will have an exhibitor’s table at Annual Convention. Look for us and join the conversation about how best the Diocese can support your ministry across boundaries.

And, together with the Minister for Congregational Vitality, we will be hosting a workshop: “Seeing God’s love transform churches through global mission.” Seeing God’s love active and powerful in the lives of people in other countries is often a transformative experience that catalyzes growth in our churches. Hear how this works and learn some tips on telling your story.

Youth in Global Mission

The participation of youth in world mission will be the focus of the November 13 Mission Thursday sponsored by the Global Episcopal Mission Network (GEMN).  The event will feature several youth from the Diocese of Maine who have been involved in companionships with people in other parts of the world and who attended the GEMN Missio Conference 2025 in Honduras. Since the youth are in high school during the day, this Mission Thursday will be held at 7pm Eastern. Register here. Simultaneous English-Spanish translation will be provided.

Episcopal Global Mission Sunday.

On the last Sunday of Epiphany, February 15, 2026, join others around the Episcopal Church to celebrate Global Mission. Contact us for prayers or a litany for global mission or to brainstorm ways to lift up our partnerships and friends around the Anglican Communion.

Global Mission Partner Country Meet-Ups

Across the Diocese of Virginia, many congregations have partnerships within the Anglican Communion around the world. Some are partnered with dioceses and/or congregations in the same country. We are kicking off a series of virtual meet ups to connect people who have or would like to have relationships in differing contexts. Our first two meet ups will be for Tanzania and South Sudan. Please spread the word with those in your congregations who have an interest in these countries. We will spend our time learning about the ministry of others and sharing our own stories. The hope is that we will all benefit from working together and be able to deepen our relationships, both with each other in our diocese and in our ministry areas. As the African proverb says: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Global Mission Moments

Have you or others from your congregation travelled this summer to work with global partners? The Diocese would like to know! Send us a short write up and a few photos to be featured as “Global Mission Moments.”

Where in the World Is Our Diocese?

Churches in our diocese support global partners in a variety of ways, and it is important for the Diocese to know about these relationships. Please contact Diane Wright, our diocesan global mission advocate, to help update our global mission database. Thank you!

Episcopal Relief & Development and Global Mission

Episcopal Relief & Development partners with faith and community leaders locally and globally to advance lasting change in communities affected by injustice, poverty, disaster, and climate change. The Rev. Deacon Nancy Searby serves as the Diocese of Virginia’s Ministry Partner. Does your congregation have an Episcopal Relief ministry partner? Contact Deacon Nancy about how you and your congregation can learn more and support this vital work.

Why Haiti? A Call to Action

The newly formed Haiti Advocacy Ministry is a group of deacons, priests, and lay persons with a long history of working in Haiti from both the Diocese of Washington and the Diocese of Virginia who have come together to share information about the dire situation in Haiti, to provide updates on the work of parishes and other organizations and to offer mutual support. All parishes and individuals in the Diocese of Virginia with an interest in Haiti are invited to be a part of this initiative. For more information, please contact Karen Wires.

To learn more about the current situation in Haiti, please read Why Haiti: A Call to Action submitted by the Haiti Advocacy Ministry.

Mission Trips/Pilgrimages 2025

Are you or members of your parish travelling abroad to support partners in mission in 2025? Let us know when and where! As Christians, we are called to serve together, as a body with many parts.  As a Diocese, we can uphold each other in prayer, share resources, broaden connections and take part in the sharing of God’s love. We may not all have the opportunity to travel but can accompany others in prayer. Thank you for sharing your recent or upcoming journeys.
