Our Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration
The Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration is the only open air Episcopal Cathedral in the country. Nestled in the woods at the base of North Mountain in the Shenandoah Valley, the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration was built in 1925 by local people, under the leadership of the Rev. Edmund Woodward. The people used horse power and their own hands to lift stones from the surrounding woods and place them stone by stone to form the Shrine.
The Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration is co-located with Shrine Mont, a Diocesan Retreat Center, and Shrine Mont Camps, which welcomes hundreds of young people to the mountain every summer to learn and grow in love of God, self, and one another.
