DESCRIPTION:Sacramental Citizenship will take place from the evening of April 12\, 2024\, to the afternoon of April 14\, 2024 at Roslyn Conference and Retreat Center in Richmond\, VA. Participants will stay on site at Roslyn and will eat\, study\, talk\, and pray together. While many participants likely live in the Richmond area\, we ask that you plan to stay at Roslyn for the duration of the retreat; proximity aids community. The fee for the retreat is $200 and includes your accommodation\, meals\, and retreat materials. Scholarships are available; please indicate a need for financial assistance when completing the registration form. \nSacramental Citizenship will be led by the Rev. Cate Anthony\, Associate Rector at St. Stephen’s in Richmond. Cate’s ministry has focused intently on cancel culture\, building community across lines of difference\, and practical Christian ethics in our contemporary context. Cate is a fellow of the Episcopal Church Foundation; this retreat is the capstone of her fellowship project. Cate will be joined by Jessica Church\, the Political Director at Public Wise\, a national organization with an unyielding commitment to building and protecting a multiracial democracy.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, April 28\, at 5:30 p.m.\, the Rev. Dr. Jennifer M. McBride will deliver the 2024 Koinonia Lecture at St. Paul’s Memorial Church entitled Faith and Advocacy on Death Row. \nThe lecture will be followed by a reception in the parish hall. \nMcBride is the author of You Shall Not Condemn: A Story of Faith and Advocacy on Death Row. She has an M.A. and Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia. She is the Associate Rector for Formation at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Atlanta. Previously she served as an Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Theology and Ethics at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago and held the Board of Regents Endowed Chair in Ethics at Wartburg College in Iowa. After a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Emory University\, McBride directed a theology certificate program for incarcerated women through Emory’s Candler School of Theology.

DESCRIPTION:Preaching and Teaching the Gospel in a Season of Anxiety \nFacilitator: The Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery\, Dean of Duke University Chapel and Professor of Homiletics and African and African American Studies. \nAbout The Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery \nThe Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery is the Dean of Duke University Chapel and Associate Professor of Homiletics at Duke Divinity School. A national leader in the theological study of the art of preaching (homiletics)\, Powery regularly delivers sermons at Duke Chapel as well as at churches throughout the United States and abroad. He is often a keynote speaker and lecturer at educational institutions\, conferences\, symposia\, and retreats. \nHis teaching and research interests are located at the intersection of preaching\, worship\, pneumatology\, and culture\, particularly expressions of the African diaspora. He has written three books: Spirit Speech: Lament and Celebration in Preaching; Dem Dry Bones: Preaching\, Death\, and Hope; and his latest book Rise Up\, Shepherd! Advent Reflections on the Spirituals. He has also co-authored an introductory textbook on preaching\, Ways of the Word: Learning to Preach for Your Time and Place. The second book in the series of meditations on the Spirituals\, this time for the season of Lent\, Were You There? Lenten Reflections on the Spiritual\, will be available in January 2019. He is also a general editor of a forthcoming nine volume lectionary commentary series for preaching and worship titled\, Connections. \nPowery was ordained by the Progressive National Baptist Convention and has served in an ecumenical capacity in churches throughout Switzerland\, Canada and the United States. He is a member of the Academy of Homiletics\, for which he has served as Secretary; the American Academy of Religion; and the Society for the Study of Black Religion. Powery served as a member of the executive lectionary team for The African-American Lectionary and is the recipient of numerous scholastic fellowships and awards. In 2008\, the African-American Pulpit named him one of 20 outstanding black ministers under the age of 40 who are helping shape the future direction of the church. More recently\, in 2014\, he was inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College for his ethical and spiritual leadership in the academy\, church\, and broader society. \nPrior to his appointment at Duke\, he served as the Perry and Georgia Engle Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Princeton Theological Seminary. He received his BA in music with a concentration in vocal performance from Stanford University\, his MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary\, and his ThD from Emmanuel College at the University of Toronto. \nHe is married to Gail Powery\, and the couple has two children. \nView the Retreat Agenda. \nThe deadline for registration is Friday\, April 19. DESCRIPTION:St. George’s will offer a special free concert on “Cinco de Mayo\,” May 5\, 2024\, at 3:00 pm\, featuring the Latin Feeling Band led by percussionist and friend of St. George’s\, Alberto “Limon” Perez. All donations from the concert will support our shared ministry with Notre Dame Episcopal Church and School in Port-Au-Prince\, Haiti. During this time of turmoil when many other churches and schools have closed in Haiti\, Notre Dame remains open as a beacon of hope through our ongoing support. \n“Limon” was born in Havana\, Cuba and has spent his musical career of 30 years performing as a folkloric and popular dancer\, as well as a vocalist and percussionist. His areas of expertise are the percussion and dance styles of rumba\, Afro-Cuban folkloric tradition\, and the popular styles of salsa. Known for their dynamic performances and fusion of traditional Latin sounds with the complex harmonies of jazz\, the Latin Feeling Band promises an unforgettable musical journey. Founded by “Limon” Perez and featuring local musicians from the Fredericksburg Jazz and Latin Music scene\, the group explores the vibrant rhythms and soulful melodies of Latin Jazz. \nThe concert is free with donations accepted at the door.
