DESCRIPTION:A diagnosis and treatment of cancer can send us into the wilderness\, whether we want to go there or not. During our weekend retreat\, we’ll talk straight about our experiences of cancer and our experiences of God in the wilderness. In conversations\, creative expressions\, and worship\, we’ll explore the biblical tradition of lamentation\, discovering how our grief tills the barren ground in which hope and praise can take root and grow. Prayers of healing and hope will frame our weekend and bind us close to the beating heart of God. Led by Bishop Susan Goff who is thriving after walking the wilderness of breast cancer during the pandemic\, while she was leading the Diocese of Virginia. DESCRIPTION:This retreat is an invitation to come home to yourself and to reconnect to the inner “you” through yoga practice. Inspired by the Richmond’s Trail of Enslaved Africans\, participants visit key historical sites tied to enslavement\, particularly the domestic slave trade\, and learn about the Church’s prominent role as the architect and beneficiary of the city and nation’s slave society. The walk is followed by a facilitated group reflection. The Walking with the Enslaved program is a collaboration between St. Paul’s and St. Philip’s Episcopal Churches. \nDay 3 – Wednesday\, September 24\, 2025 \n\nVisit to Mount Vernon\nVisit to Alexandria Lynching Square\nParish Racial Justice Presentation\n\nStart the day at Mount Vernon\, examining the complex history of slavery at George Washington’s estate. After lunch\, we’ll visit Alexandria Lynching Square and engage with the racial history of the area. \nDay 4 – Thursday\, September 25\, 2025 \n\nVisit to University of Virginia\nVisit to Charlottesville\, VA\n\nAt the University of Virginia\, reflect on the institution’s history and its role in perpetuating systemic racism. DESCRIPTION:Guest organist Dr. Christopher Reynolds (Director of Music and Organist at St. Paul’s\, Richmond) will present a 30-minute organ recital at St. Paul’s Memorial Church\, Charlottesville\, followed by Choral Evensong for the Feast of St. Michael & All Angels\, sung by the St. Paul’s Memorial Church Parish Choir (directed by Deke Polifka). \nDr. Reynolds will play works by Dubois\, Willan\, Howells\, Manz and Mendelssohn\, showcasing our recently restored 1926 E. M. Skinner pipe organ. Evensong includes the St. Paul’s Service by Herbert Howells and Edward Bairstow’s haunting setting of Let all mortal flesh keep silence\, as well as festive hymns and service music by Joanna Forbes L’Estrange and John Goss. \nChoral Evensong\, considered the crown jewel of the Anglican choral tradition\, is a form of Evening Prayer that draws from the medieval Latin offices of Vespers and Compline. This service is unique to churches of the Anglican Communion and has remained unchanged for centuries. All are invited to this beautiful service of music and prayers.
