SUMMARY:Walking With the Enslaved Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the worshiping communities of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church\, you are invited to register for Walking with the Enslaved: A Pilgrimage toward Truth\, Reconciliation\, and Hope in Richmond. \nThrough this immersive\, faith-based experience\, participants engage with four centuries of Richmond’s racial history. On this journey\, we confront the ways that white people distorted Christianity to justify colonization\, slavery\, and the construct of racial identity while recognizing the role that Christian faith played for African Americans to inspire resistance\, hope\, and liberation. By uncovering the truth of this history\, we seek to inspire racial healing and equip communities to enact Jesus-centered justice in the future. \nThe pilgrimage occurs in two parts on separate\, consecutive days:  \nSaturday\, March 21st from 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM:  An experiential walking tour of historical sites\, including lunch\, that begins and ends at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (815 E. Grace Street). Participants stand and walk for extended periods during the site visits\, covering two to three miles overall with a bus transporting participants between some of the sites. \nExpect varying terrain and levels of difficulty\, including dirt trails\, cobblestones\, and moderate inclines. Please inform us of any mobility concerns ahead of time. \nSunday\, March 22nd from 1 PM – 3 PM:  A facilitated group reflection at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church (2900 Hanes Ave.) from 1 PM to 3 PM. \nThe group reflection is integral to the pilgrimage experience. It is expected that anyone who signs up for the pilgrimage is committed to participating on both days. \nPilgrimage Fees & Support\nThe registration fee for the two-day pilgrimage is $35 per person. We offer scholarships so that cost is never a barrier to participation. \nThe true cost of offering this pilgrimage is closer to $100 per person. If you are able\, we warmly welcome additional donations to help sustain the program and make participation possible for others. \nParticipation is limited to 35 people. \nDetails on preparation and logistics will be provided to participants one week before the pilgrimage. \nFor more information or to inquire about scholarships\, please contact Dr. Glyn Hughes\, Program Director.

SUMMARY:Migration with Dignity
DESCRIPTION:The Episcopal Diocese of Virginia will recognize Migration with Dignity on Sunday\, February 8\, announced Bishop E. Mark Stevenson. This is an opportunity to learn about and teach about Migration with Dignity principles which address the challenges of global migration in a new way while aligning with the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international laws and agreements. \nAt the 81st General Convention in June 2024\, the Episcopal Church adopted a resolution calling for Migration with Dignity. \nAll congregations are encouraged to celebrate Migration with Dignity and to advance the vital work of justice in our communities every day. Resources are available in the toolkit. \n“Our commitment to Migration with Dignity is a living expression of our baptismal covenant to strive for justice and peace among all people\,” Bishop Stevenson said. “As we observe Migration with Dignity Sunday on February 8 in the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia\, we are reminded that to welcome the stranger is to welcome Christ himself. More than simply providing resources\, this observance is an expression of our unwavering commitment to the systemic work of advocacy\, and to championing the protections and inherent rights that reflect the divine worth of every human being.” \n“As Episcopalians\, we are called upon to affirm Migration with Dignity as a framework to guide ministry with migrants\,” the resolution reads in part\, “making urgent efforts to support arriving migrants’ immediate needs for shelter\, food\, clothing\, legal assistance\, work permits\, healthcare\, transportation…We are also urged to advocate for Migration with Dignity to local\, state\, national\, and international governing bodies\, exhorting them to enforce existing laws and policies that uphold these principles and to enact new laws and policies guaranteeing migrants welcome\, protection\, and integration into our common human journey.” \nRead the entire resolution here.

SUMMARY:Triangle of Hope Youth Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:The Triangle of Hope is an Anglican-led effort to form covenantal community between the dioceses of Liverpool (England)\, Kumasi (Ghana)\, and Virginia dedicated to transforming the long history\, ongoing effects and continuing presence of slavery in our world through repentance\, reconciliation and mission. Each one of our Dioceses was directly involved in the dreadful Slave Triangle. We remember and acknowledge with sorrow that human beings were captured and enslaved for financial gain with no regard for their dignity and humanity. We view this history with great pain and in penitence before God\, the God who wills in Christ to bring freedom and justice for all. \nLearn More

SUMMARY:Social Change and Black Mysticism: Prophetic Voices of Thurman & Wilson
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE PROGRAM \nThis short course explores the interplay of Howard Thurman and August Wilson as prophetic voices. The course will focus on four Wilson plays\, accompanied by examinations of Thurman’s spiritual foundation for social change. These August Wilson plays were chosen because in each there is a transforming power of transcendent forces. \nHoward Thurman (1899-1981) was an author\, philosopher\, theologian and teacher who examined the spiritual dimensions of social change. His teachings helped to empower the great civil rights activists of the 20th century. Thurman never marched in demonstrations\, nor did he speak at rallies\, yet his articulated wisdom and intellectual heft gave spiritual strength to great leaders\, each of whom cite the impact of his prophetic voice. Ever the shaman\, his intellectual protégées included: Martin Luther King\, James Farmer\, Bayard Rustin\, Vernon Jordan\, Pauli Murray\, Samuel DeWitt Procter\, James Cone\, Angela Davis\, James Baldwin\, and countless others. \nSince the 1984 performances of his play\, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom stunned Broadway audiences\, August Wilson became the most important American playwright of the preceding 50 years\, and then beyond. Although his celebrated life as a man of letters was brief (he died in 2005 at the age of 60)\, his decade-by-decade ten play cycle of 20th century Black America eclipsed the careers of other giants of the American theater\, including: Edward Albee\, Tennessee Williams\, Arthur Miller and Eugene O’Neill. Wilson never limited the spiritual lives of his characters to traditional Christianity. In fact\, he questioned how the enslaved could conceivably worship the same God as the enslaver. Thus\, he reached back and called upon the ancient African myths\, legends and traditions as his characters take their journey to liberation. This spiritual world he made transcended the here\, the now\, the merely pedestrian and mined the world of dreams\, visions\, and the joy of hope. \nCourse Outline: \nApril 4\, 2024 – Gem of the Ocean (the 1900’s)\nMay 1\, 2024 – Joe Turner’s Come and Gone (the 1910’s)\nMay 8\, 2024 – The Piano Lesson (the 1930’s)\nMay 15\, 2024 – King Hedley (the 1980’s) \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND \nThis program is ideal for clergy\, lay leaders\, seminarians\, educators\, and anyone passionate about the intersection of spirituality\, social justice\, and the arts. Whether you are exploring Howard Thurman’s spiritual foundation for social change\, delving into August Wilson’s transformative storytelling\, or seeking inspiration from prophetic voices\, this course offers profound insights. Perfect for those engaged in church leadership\, theological study\, cultural scholarship\, or community activism\, it fosters meaningful dialogue on the transcendent forces that shape liberation and hope. \nRegister Online

We’ll share why we’re here\, and why we’re interested in NFP/church management\, and what YOU want to cover in this course\, time-permitting! We’ll share our individual contexts as leaders\, the NFPs we have experienced and know\, and the community “participants” (clients) served and the populations represented. Finally\, we’ll look at what a faith-based NFP looks like and what the differences are from a “secular” NFP and\, culturally speaking\, how a faith-based NFP differs from a church. \nSession II: Presenting TWO NFP Models: What does NFP Management look like in terms of structure\, staffing\, geography\, and the role of volunteers? We’ll discuss what church management look like\, what the differences are with NFP’s\, both faith-based and secular. We’ll discuss various NFP types\, missions\, staffing\, and staffing configurations. We’ll also examine the challenges of hiring in NFPs particularly the challenge of matching position descriptions with skill sets\, defining what you need\, but looking for what you want. \nSession III: Management Roles and Responsibilities in an NFP. We’ll look at how roles and responsibilities differ in the two models\, in this case a faith-based model and a secular model. We’ll also talk about the oversight bodies and how they function or are supposed to function – not just the Board\, but the Management Team\, Committee Chairs and\, in one model\, a Partner Council – and how that is integrated structurally with a Board. Finally\, we’ll discuss the budget process\, including what a budget really is\, and how it’s understood by different management players in an NFP\, e.g.\, Finance v. Development. \nSession IV: Organizational Oversight & Strategic Visioning/Planning in an NFP. We’ll draw distinctions between the visioning\, the planning\, and the implementation of the Plan. We’ll also go into some detail discussing process\, players\, roles\, and the nature of the Plan’s content\, e.g.\, how detailed or general should it be? We’ll even discuss the debate about whether making a Strategic Plan even makes sense! This is the debate about annual strategic goals vs. a longer plan\, which came back to life in the Pandemic. Finally\, we’ll try to wrap it up\, discussing the view from the top (e.g. CEO and COO). \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND \n-Clergy and Lay Leaders seeking to enhance their understanding of nonprofit and church management and refine their leadership and organizational skills.\n-Faith-Based Nonprofit Professionals navigating the complexities of mission-driven work.\nIndividuals Considering a Career Change into nonprofit management or exploring a vocational calling.\n-Anyone Interested in Strategic Leadership within the context of nonprofits and faith communities. \nRegister Online
