DESCRIPTION:A weekend of contemplative events and services to recommitting ourselves to the ongoing work of truth telling\, repair\, and racial justice and healing to foster God’s Beloved Community. This year we are excited to host Dr. Catherine Meeks as our featured preacher\, workshop leaders\, and forum speaker.  Dr. Meeks is the founder and retired Director of the Episcopal Church’s Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing.  Events include: \n\nFriday\, October 18\, 3:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.: Walking with the Enslaved: The Church’s Role in Slavery pilgrimage and dinner (please register below\, limit 25 people). NOTE: This iteration of the pilot program will be particularly geared for those with mobility issues.  We are renting a passenger bus and the pilgrimage will involve minimal or optional walking.  \nSaturday\, October 19\, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.: Racial Healing Workshop with Dr. Catherine Meeks with lunch included\, Scott Hall (please register below\, no limit).  Racism’s roots can be located deep inside of human beings in the unknowns of their souls. Racial healing requires an investigation into those unknowns and seeking to allow the light of consciousness and love to heal them. Please join Dr. Catherine Meeks to explore those roots and ways to remedy their impact internally and externally.  \nSunday\, October 20\, 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.: Reconciliation Sunday with liturgy of racial healing featuring guest preacher Dr. Catherine Meeks followed by a Faith and Action Forum at 11:30 a.m. (in Scott Hall) on reparative actions with Dr. Meeks and The Rev. Dr. Lee Hill\, Canon for Racial Justice and Healing for the Diocese of Virginia (no registration required)\n\nDr. Catherine Meeks is a national leader of racial healing and an esteemed retired professor of African American studies. She is the founder and former executive director of the Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing\, and the author of several books and podcasts.  A sought-after teacher and workshop leader\, Dr. Meeks is a recipient of the President Joseph R. SUMMARY:Annual Messiah Sing-Along
DESCRIPTION:The popular presentation and community sing of the Christmas portion of G.F. Handel’s beloved oratorio is in its 31 st year. St. Peter’s Choirs and Friends\, a chamber orchestra\, and featured soloists will be led and conducted by James Selway\, St. Peter’s Music Director and Organist. He will be assisted and accompanied by Assistant Music Director Matteo Mangialetti. Soloists will include Francesca Aguado\, Soprano; Erin Causey\, Alto; Émile Joseph Weeks\, Tenor; and Christopher Fotis\, Baritone. Orchestra members include Teri Lazar and Leslie Fearing\, violin; Osman Kivrak\, viola; Susan Kelly\, cello; Bill Hones\, bass; Amy Hones and Patty Beneke\, oboe; and Matteo Mangialetti\, harpsichord. \nIn December 2011 the St. Peter’s Messiah Sing-Along was featured to illustrate a segment with poet Mark Doty on the PBS NewsHour\, which remains available for viewing through the PBS NewsHour website. \nAdmission is free—donations are welcome\, along with non-perishable food items for local food banks. \nChorus singers wishing to sing along should bring their own Handel Messiah score\, or they may borrow or purchase one at the door.

DESCRIPTION:St. James’s will be celebrating – and honoring – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in multiple ways on January 19 and 20. \nOn Sunday the 19th at 5 pm come to our moving and gorgeous Evensong\, featuring St. James’s Choirs and the Concert Choir of Norfolk State University\, directed by Dr. Harlan Zachery. Dr. Carl W. Haywood will once again be the Organist and Guest Conductor. Martin Luther King’s stirring “I Have a Dream” speech will be read by Dr. Ronald Crutcher\, president emeritus at University of Richmond\, and prayers will be offered by the Rt. Rev. E. Mark Stevenson\, Bishop of Virginia.  \nOn Monday the 20th at 10 am\, we’ll be hosting a reading of MLK’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” The readers include many local clerics and laypeople\, including Richmond Mayor Danny Avula. \nIn addition\, our Youth will be honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. through service in the Catacombs\, an area of our church used 24/7 by local NA and AA groups.
